First Eucharist
Receiving First Eucharist is a joyful moment for a child, a family, and the whole parish. In the Eucharist, also called Holy Communion, Catholics receive Jesus Christ, truly present in the sacrament. At every Mass, Christ gathers us, nourishes us with his Body and Blood, and sends us to live as his people in the world.
First Eucharist is not simply a special day to celebrate with family and friends. It begins a child’s fuller participation in the Mass and in the sacramental life of the Church. The preparation helps children learn what the Eucharist is, how to participate reverently at Mass, and how Jesus continues to draw close to us in this sacred gift.
Parents have an important place in this preparation. Children learn the faith through classes and parish life, but they also learn through family prayer, Sunday Mass, questions around the dinner table, and the example of the adults who love them.
Preparing for First Eucharist
At Christ on the Mountain, children in third grade and older prepare for First Eucharist together with Confirmation. Children first complete preparation for Reconciliation, then continue into this next stage of sacramental preparation. Elementary students take part in Sunday faith formation, and families receive additional material to complete at home. Parents are expected to participate in Adult Formation and the preparation meetings connected to these sacraments. Students and sponsors, or a sponsor’s proxy, also take part in the required meetings and rehearsal. The parish will provide the current calendar, registration information, and meeting details through the Children’s Formation page. Please contact the parish if your child is older than the usual grade level, has been baptized in another Christian tradition, or has a different sacramental history.
